Mrs. Sarah Joseph OBE

“We have to demonstrate. With placards where necessary, with silent candle-lit vigils too. But we must demonstrate our love for humanity. Demonstrate goodness, beauty, and compassion … know that God has power over all things. Know that injustice cannot persist. It goes against the natural order of things.”

Mrs. Sarah Joseph OBE

A graduate of King’s College London’s Department of Theology and Religious Studies, Sarah is an internationally recognized public speaker. Renowned for her independent and innovative thinking, she has addressed eclectic audiences the world over – from South Asia’s leading CEOs at the Khazanah Mega Trends Forum in Malaysia to worshipers at Westminster Abbey in London.

She was listed as one of the UK’s most powerful Muslims by Carter Andersen, one of Europe’s 40 most influential leaders under 40 by EuropaNova, and one of the World’s 500 most influential Muslims by Georgetown University and the Jordanian Royal Islamic Strategic Studies Centre.

Sarah was made an Officer of the British Empire (OBE) for services to interfaith dialogue and the promotion of women’s rights.

In 2003 Sarah founded emel – a brand which first created the concept and then detailed the progression of Muslim Lifestyle. Her decades of media work and engagement made Sarah a foremost expert in contemporary Muslim consumers and ethics. Sarah has trained numerous creative teams in both the written word and design. She has conceptualized and developed multiple publications and websites, for her own company and for others.

Sarah regularly appears on media such as the BBC, CNN and Al-Jazeera, as well as the Doha Debates. She has written for the UK’s The Times and The Guardian, and scripted and recorded for a variety of BBC and independent radio productions. She is a regular faith contributor on BBC radio programs.

Sarah was one of a handful of members of the Muslim community selected to discuss with the Prime Minister and Foreign Secretary issues in the aftermath of the London bombings, and subsequently became a member of the Home Office Task Force on extremism. She has worked tirelessly to counter extremism in all its forms, in talks and writing. “God emphatically describes the mission of the Prophet, “We have not sent you except as a mercy to all the worlds”. (21:107) The Prophet was not sent as a terror, as a scourge, as a slayer—but as a mercy. And a mercy to whom? To his tribe, the Quraysh? To the Arabs? To the Muslims? No, to everyone!” she declared in an emel editorial in September 2012 (http://emel.com/article?id=109&a_id=2799&c=63). She has also served on the UK Government’s Cross Government Working Group on Anti-Muslim hatred.
