      • 1978 December 5

        The Foundation is established to commemorate the fortieth anniversary of Rissho Kosei-kai.

      • December 12

        First meeting of its board of directors is held.

      • 1979 March 8

        First meeting of its board of trustees is held.

      • March 14

        First lecture meeting at Yasuda Hall in Tokyo to commemorate its founding is held.

        Professor Takeshi Umehara, president of Kyoto City University of Arts, gives a lecture on “The Formation of Human Character in the 21st Century” and Rev. Nikkyo Niwano, founder of Rissho Kosei-kai, speaks on “World Peace and the Role of Religion.”

      • April 13

        First meeting of its screening committee for grants is held.

      • May 9

        First presentation ceremony of its grants is held at Rissho Kosei-kai in Tokyo.

      • May 23

        Organizes the preparatory committee for the Niwano Peace Prize. July 10: publishes its first annual report.

      • 1979 July 10

        First edition of Niwano heiwa zaidan ho (Journal of Niwano Peace Foundation) issued.

      • 1980 December 10

        Organizes a peace study seminar. The seminar was held ninety-one times through 1993.

      • 1981 September 16

        A symposium under the theme “Life-science and Religion” is held in Tokyo.

      • 1982 May 8

        First seminar on life-science and religion is held in Tokyo. The seminar is held four times in that month.

      • 1982 November 15

        First edition of Heiwa to Shukyo (Peace and Religion) and Echo of Peace, the English-language periodical, issued.

      • 1983 February 14

        A press conference to announce the first Niwano Peace Prize recipient, Archbishop Helder P. Camara from Brazil, is held in Tokyo.

      • April 7

        The presentation ceremony for the prize recipient is held in Tokyo.

      • 1984 April 27

        The presentation ceremony for the second Niwano Peace Prize recipient, Dr. Homer A. Jack from the U.S.A., is held at the Japan Press Center Hall in Tokyo.

      • 1985 April 9

        The presentation ceremony for the third Niwano Peace Prize recipient, Mr. Zhao Pu Chu from China, is held at the Japan Press Center Hall in Tokyo.

      • October 22

        Begins the holding of a symposium of its research-grant recipients on the theme of life-science and religion in Tokyo. Until 1992, the symposium was held annually on different subjects under the same overall theme.

      • 1986 April 22

        The presentation ceremony for the fourth Niwano Peace Prize recipient, Dr. Philip A. Potter from Dominica, is held in Tokyo.

      • 1987 April 23

        The presentation ceremony for the fifth Niwano Peace Prize recipient, the World Muslim Congress headquartered in Karachi, Pakistan is held at Tokyo.

      • 1988 April 29

        Host the first lecture on world peace at the Iwate Prefectural Hall in Morioka, Iwate Prefecture. The course of lectures was held three times until October of that year.

      • 1989 April 20

        The presentation ceremony for the sixth Niwano Peace Prize recipient, Rev. Etai Yamada from Shiga Prefecture, is held at Tokyo.

      • 1990 April 24

        The presentation ceremony for the seventh Niwano Peace Prize recipient, Dr. Norman Cousins from the U.S.A. is held at Tokyo.

      • 1990 September 3

        Begins the holding of an annual symposium of its activity-grant recipients in Tokyo.

    • 1991 May 13

      The presentation ceremony for the eighth Niwano Peace Prize recipient, Dr. Hildegard Goss-Mayr from Austria, is held at Tokyo.

    • 1992 May 12

      The presentation ceremony for the ninth Niwano Peace Prize recipient, Dr. A. T. Ariyaratne from Sri Lanka, is held at Tokyo.

    • June 10

      Inaugurates Rev. Nichiko Niwano, president of Rissho Kosei- kai, as president of the Foundation and Rev. Nikkyo Niwano, founder of Rissho Kosei-kai, as its honorary president.

    • 1993 May 12

      The presentation ceremony for the tenth Niwano Peace Prize recipient, Neve Shalom/Wahat al-Salam from Israel, is held at Tokyo.

    • 1994 May 11

      The presentation ceremony for the eleventh Niwano Peace Prize recipient, Paulo E. Cardinal Arns from Brazil, is held at Tokyo.

    • May 12

      Hosts a symposium on the role of religion in the 21st century at the Kyoto Fumon Hall of Rissho Kosei-kai. The Foundation annually hosted a similar special symposium in the hall through 1998.

    • 1995 May 11

      The presentation ceremony for the twelfth Niwano Peace Prize recipient, Dr. M. Aram from India, is held at Tokyo.

    • 1996 May 9

      The presentation ceremony for the thirteenth Niwano Peace Prize recipient, Ms. Marii K. Hasegawa from the U.S.A., is held at Tokyo.

    • 1997 May 8

      The presentation ceremony for the fourteenth Niwano Peace Prize recipient, the Corrymeela Community from Northern Ireland, is held at Tokyo.

    • 1998 May 9

      The presentation ceremony for the fifteenth Niwano Peace Prize recipient, Ven. Maha Ghosananda from Cambodia, is held at Rissho Kosei-kai in Tokyo.

    • October 24

      Hosts a symposium entitled “Living in the Present: Healing Hearts and Minds in Contemporary Society” to commemorate its twentieth anniversary in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture.

    • 1999 May 7

      The presentation ceremony for the sixteenth Niwano Peace Prize recipient, the Community of Saint Edigio from Italy, is held at Tokyo.

    • October 4

      The Foundation’s honorary president, Rev. Nikkyo Niwano, passes away.

    • 2000 May 12

      The presentation ceremony for the seventeenth Niwano Peace Prize recipient, Dr. Kang Wong Yong from South Korea, is held at Tokyo.

    • 2001 May 10

      The presentation ceremony for the eighteenth Niwano Peace Prize recipient, Rev. Father Elias Chacour from Israel, is held at Tokyo.

    • 2002 March 9

      Inaugurates Rev. Kinjiro Niwano, an emeritus executive board member of Rissho Kosei-kai, as the Foundation’s chairperson.

    • April 7

      The Foundation’s former chairperson, Rev. Motoyuki Naganuma, passes away.

    • May 9

      The presentation ceremony for the nineteenth Niwano Peace Prize recipient, Bishop Samuel Ruiz Garcia from Mexico, is held at Tokyo.

    • 2003 May 8

      The presentation ceremony for the twentieth Niwano Peace Prize recipient, Dr. Priscilla Elworthy from the U.K., is held. Niwano Peace Prize Committee is organized and its activities is launched.

    • October 18-20

      The Niwano Peace Forum 2003 in Tokyo under the theme “The Roles of Religious People and Organizations in Conflict Situations.”

    • 2004 May 11

      The presentation ceremony for the twenty-first Niwano Peace Prize recipient, the Acholi Religious Leaders’ Peace Initiative of Uganda, is held at the Tokyo International Forum.

    • 2005 May 11

      The presentation ceremony for the twenty-second Niwano Peace Prize recipient, Dr. Hans Kung of Germany, is held at the Nippon Press Center building in Tokyo.

    • 2006 May 11

      The presentation ceremony for the twenty-third Niwano Peace Prize recipient, Rabbis for Human Rights of Israel, is held at the Foreign Correspondents’Club of Japan.

    • 2007 May 11

      The presentation ceremony for the twenty-fourth Niwano Peace Prize recipient, Dharma Master Cheng Yen of the Republic of China, is held at the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of Japan.

    • 2008 May 8

      The presentation ceremony for the twenty-fifth Niwano Peace Prize recipient, His Royal Highness Prince El Hassan bin Talal of Jordan, is held at the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of Japan.

    • 2009 May 7

      The presentation ceremony for the twenty-sixth Niwano Peace Prize recipient, Rev. Canon Gideon Byamugisha, of Uganda, is held at the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of Japan.

    • 2010 May 13

      The presentation ceremony for the twenty-seventh Niwano Peace Prize recipient, Ms. Ela Ramesh Bhatt of India, is held at the Foreign correspondents’ Club of Japan.

    • 2010 November 18

      Requalified as a public interest corporate foundation under new laws related to the reform of the public interest corporation system administrated by the Cabinet office of government.

      Registered as a public interest corporate foundation.

      The presentation ceremony for the 28th Niwano Peace Prize recipient, Mr. Sulak Sivaraksa of Thailand, is held at the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of Japan.

    • 2012 May 10

      The presentation ceremony for the 29th Niwano Peace Prize recipient, Ms. Rosalina Tuyuc Velásquez of Guatemala, is held at the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of Japan.

    • 2013 May 16

      The presentation ceremony for the 30th Niwano Peace Prize recipient, Rt. Rev. Dr. Gunnar Stålsett of Norway, is held at the International House of Japan, Tokyo.

    • 2014 March 9

      Rev. Kinjiro Niwano, chairperson of the board of trustee of the Foundation, dies.

    • 2014 April 17

      Dr. Hiroshi Niwano becomes Chairperson of the board of trustees of the foundation.

    • May 16

      The presentation ceremony for the 31st Niwano Peace Prize recipient, Ms. Dena Merriam of the United States, is held at the International House of Japan, Tokyo.

    • 2015 May 14

      The presentation ceremony for the 32nd Niwano Peace Prize recipient, Mrs. Esther Abimiku Ibanga of Nigeria, is held at the International House of Japan, Tokyo.

    • 2016 May 12

      The presentation ceremony for the 33rd Niwano Peace Prize recipient, Center for Peace Building and Reconciliation (CPBR) of Sri Lanka, is held at the International House of Japan, Tokyo.

    • 2017 July 27

      The presentation ceremony for the 34th Niwano Peace Prize recipient, Bishop Dr. Munib A. Younan of Palestine, is held at the International House of Japan, Tokyo.

    • 2018 May 9

      The presentation ceremony for the 35th Niwano Peace Prize recipient, Adyan Foundtion of Lebanon, is held at the International House of Japan, Tokyo.
