Ms. Elizabeth Moreno Barco, known as ‘Chava,’ is one of the Colombians displaced by the country’s long-term internal conflict and has been acting for peace and human rights in Choco, where she lives. Despite the Peace Accord of 2016 in Colombia, the Choco region is still a conflict zone where multiple armed groups are active. In this situation, Ms. Moreno is working to bring peace to the people in the region. She leads civil society organizations such as ACADESAN and FISCH, which contribute to negotiating with armed groups and protecting the rights of displaced persons and people in the region. Her receipt of the UNHCR’s “Nansen Refugee Award” and her speech at the UN Security Council are worthy of special mention. She is currently participating in the Colombian government’s peace implementation agency, where her courageous practices and leadership are highly regarded nationally and internationally.
